Jim MacGregor,
As I, Raymond L.Morehead, have not been elected or acclaimed Chief of the Clan, nor do I have official recognition by Lord Lyon at this time, I will be acting Society President and Clan Chief unless asked to step aside by a more qualified Clan member for the betterment of the Clan. My initial goal in undertaking this task is to bring to light the honorable Clan Muirhead, for all our descendants.
The battle fought upon the plain of Brankstone, afterwards called the Battle of Flodden Field by the English, is where the ancient family of the Muirheads of Lachope, who were chiefs of their clan, fought and died bravely. The Laird of Muirhead Clan Chief, his son and over 200 of their clansman answered the call of their King, where they occupied the post of honor and of danger as the bodyguards of Stuart, James IV King of Scotland. For on the afternoon of 9 September 1513 they would seal their loyal devotion to their Monarch with their fatal feat of arms and blood, in a battle that in the end became a massacre. The English would report over 10,000 Scots dead including the Scots King James IV, his son Alexander and with them the flower of Scottish chivalry. The King's entire guard, Nine earls, fourteen Lords, the chiefs of many of the great Highland Clans, Archbishop of St. Andrews, the Bishop of Caitness, the Bishop of the Isles, the Dean of Glasgow and the Provost of Edinburgh, and thousands of Scotland's best young men. It is said that you could not point to a worshipful family in Scotland that did not own a grave on Brankstone Moor.
An old Gaelic proverb goes, "Remember the men from whence you came". I would like to update this to, "Remember the men and women from whence you came, for in the remembering they live once again for you and all those that follow." I could think of no better way to honor our Ancestors than to designate September 9, 1999 as the date of the resurgence of the Muirhead Clan and set out to gather the Clan Muirhead into a Society. The purposes of the Muirhead Clan Society are to honor our Scottish heritage and to instill in others and us an interest in the Scottish traditions and culture. To collect and preserve literary, historical and genealogical records relating to the Muirhead Clan and their descendents. Adopt or have created a Clan Tartan and badge. To see to the publication of literature and the reproduction of art pertaining to the history and traditions of the Clan. To promote the general interests of the Muirheads internationally, and to cultivate the spirit of kinship and fellowship among all Muirheads and associated families. Finally have the Muirhead Clan Society officially recognized by September 9, 2000. This is something I can not do alone, but the Clan members working together CAN!
Please feel free to send your family genealogical information to Susan Shaw at ClanMuirhead@aol.com. The Family information you send to the Muirhead Clan Society becomes part of an active computer-based Muirhead/Morehead genealogy project. Note your membership gives you the added benefit of access to the Clans growing database for genealogical inquires. Please remember Susan has the burden of a database that is growing all the time but will respond to your requests as time permits.
