2.  Society of Genealogists Archives to be Offered by Origins.net

The Society of Genealogists (http://www.sog.org.uk), has selected Origins.net to provide exclusive internet access for an initial ten-year period to important elements of its valuable collections of indexes and genealogical data.  With the addition of data from the Society, family researchers with British ancestry now gain a unique, new Internet resource for ancestral information.  Access will no longer be restricted to those who can travel to the Society's premises in London, nor will researchers have to contend with the tens of thousands of visitors that crowd the aisles of the Society of Genealogists Library every year.

About the Society of Genealogists The Society of Genealogists was founded in 1911 and is a charitable organization offering a unique combination of research material, guidance, and support for those interested in family history and the lives of earlier generations.  Its objective is to promote, encourage, and foster the study, science and knowledge of genealogy.  Its Library is the foremost in the British Isles with a large collection of family histories, civil registration and census and the widest collection of Parish Register copies in the country.

The Society's collections bring together thousands of source materials such as parish registers and bishops' transcripts, monumental inscriptions and censuses, local history, as well as an unequalled assembly of research notes on families.  More important are the unique indexes and finding aids that have been compiled from a number of sources that enable access to a vast fund of useful genealogical data.  Chief amongst these are those finding aids listed below that will be the first datasets to appear on the Origins.net web site beginning in the fourth quarter of 2000.

Society of Genealogists Archives to be Offered by Origins.net:-

An extraordinary amount of wonderful genealogical material is buried in archives, accessible only to a few.  Origins.net and the Internet allow millions of family historians worldwide to access this material, making their research more productive.  Using the Internet for family history research eliminates distance barriers, and creates strong 'virtual' communities linked together by common interest in family, heritage, and culture.  We are delighted to work with the Society of Genealogists to allow Web access to their rich holdings.

Origins.net Careful Methodology to Capture Meaningful Data.  The closer data is to the source material, the more valuable to the researcher.  Origins.net works with the Society of Genealogists and other information owners and custodians to create accurate indexes, and to decipher and transcribe the old handwritten text of irreplaceable and fragile original material, producing archival copies on microfilm and in digital form.

Origins.net staff have decades of experience with this type of work.  The computerised data - indexes and images - are placed on the Worldwide Web.  Paper copies of the source material can be ordered via the Web.

3.  Cyndi of Cyndi's List Praises Origins

At the recent National Genealogical Society (of the USA), 2000 Conference in Providence Rhode Island, Cyndi and Mark Howells of the wonderful genealogy resource Cyndi's List (http://www.cyndislist.com) sought out the Origins.net staff to praise our support staff who anticipated a billing problem and corrected it before she was aware of it.  They had many kind to things to say about having "gotten it right." She went on to name Scots Origins as one of the top twelve internet sites for genealogy in her presentation "The Internet for Genealogy: A Twelve-Site Program.  "Among many more kind things, she said, "The secure online ordering of the records cannot be easier, making this the model for all future records offices to use as they develop their online presence."

4.  New Resources

We have just added a link to the Society of Genealogists Bookshop, which provides a particularly comprehensive list of genealogy books, all of which can be ordered via the Web.

See the articles link at http://www.scotsorigins.com/help/popup-resarticles-so.htm.

We have just added a link to a new map site, which should make searching for UK place names much easier.  The link can be found on the place names search feature.

5.  New Output Options for Database Search Results

We have introduced new display options for results downloaded from the Scots Origins database.  After downloading a page of results the user now has the option to re-display the page in a printer-friendly format.  This will show the same page of results in black and white on a single printable page.

6.  Scots Origins Discussion Group Update

The Scots Origins Discussion Group has now been operating for almost a year.  The group is hosted by Egroups and at the time of writing has over 750 active members.  Since the group was started there have been 8,700 messages posted and these can be viewed by clicking on the link below:

7.  Higher Speed Access to the Scots Origins Database Server

The internet connection to the Scots Origins database server was upgraded on the 25th May 2000.  This upgrade should improve download speeds from the main server and ensure that even at peak times all registered users will experience fast access.

8.  Accessing the Scots Origins - New "Technical Issues" Pages

Recent visitors to the site may have noticed a new link entitled "technical issues".  This will be used to inform customers of any technical problems that may affect their ability to use our service.
