Here, Rob Roy escaped from the captivity of the Duke of Montrose.  Balquhidder is also the site of his grave where he is interred with his heroic wife, Helen, and his family.

See Rob Roy - Miscellaneous for more information about Rob Roy  and Excerpts from Rob Roy And Selected Poems for a ballad celebratging the achievement of Robert Oig, or Young Rob Roy, as the Lowlanders called him.

General information about Balquhidder may be found at Information for Visitors to Balquhidder, complete with maps.

The Friends of Balquhidder Church have a Web site with much history of Balquhidder and the church.  The site provides navigation to pages telling of the town and church at different times in history.

The plaque on the church bears the crest of the Chief of Clan Maclaren and informs the visitor:  For generations of MacLarens their place of worship and within whose walls their chiefs are buried.

The MacLarens were the hereditary clan at Balquhidder.  The ancestor is believed to have been Laurence, Abbot of Achtow in Balquhidder, who lived in the thirteenth century.  Balquhidder passed into the hands of the Crown, and in 1490, a Stewart was appointed the royal baillie.  The MacGregors arrived in Balquhidder Glen later after losing their ancestral lands in GlenStrae to the Campbells.  This story becomes very complicated.

The gravestone is inscribed with a line from MacGregor's Gathering by Sir Walter Scott, MacGregor Despite Them, and information that the grave is also that of Helen Mary (his wife), and sons Coll and Robert.  A biographical sketch of Rob Roy may be found at Heart o' Scotland, and there is a FAQ.

See The Cemetery for links to information on multiple burials in one gravesite.
