Kirriemuir - Glengate, The Boot Factory - October 1997
This is the site of the old boot and shoe factory.
In the summer of 1957, The Capital Scot got his father's watch cleaned and new keys made for it at the shop where it had been purchased in the 19th Century, John Forrest, High Street. (The store was gone by last visit in 1977.)
The stiff wa'ak up the Tannage Brae,
The climb up o' the Roods,
The view o' Strathmore ye did hae,
An' then through Caddam Wood.
(The hide tanners used to be along this way. It goes onto the Glengate as one walks into town.)

Kirriemuir - Glengate, The Watchmaker - John Forrest - 1860s
John Forrest, watchmaker, had a shop in the Glengate during the 19th and 20th centuries. Perhaps it was there earlier than that. The Capital Scot had his father's watch, given to him by his uncle James (blacksmith), repaired in the shop in June 1957. The watchmaker not only repaired the watch, but also made new keys with which to wind it and set the time. Watchmakers used to place an advertisement for their shops -like the one shownin this picture - in the backs of watches.
The incscription on this label reads (from center outwards): "John Forrest Watchmaker and Jeweller 18 Glengate Street Kirriemuir
